LAHORE (Sapeher Times) The 8th World Taekwondo President’s Cup 2026 – Asian Region will be held in Lahore from August 17 to 21, 2026 featuring some of the best taekwondo teams from across Asia. The announcement was made by Pakistan Taekwondo Federation Chairman Colonel (Retd.) Waseem Ahmed Janjua during a well-attended press conference at the Royal Swiss International Hotel alongside the federation’s Patron-in-Chief and the Secretary of Para Taekwondo. Colonel Janjua said this would be the first time in the history of taekwondo that Lahore would host a world-class event of this scale. He stated that the five-day championship is expected to attract around 200 athletes from approximately 35 countries. Participation has already been confirmed by 24 countries while registrations from the remaining nations are expected to be completed by the first week of August. Responding to a question, Colonel Janjua described the hosting of this world-level event in Pakistan as a major achievement saying it would provide Pakistani athletes with an excellent opportunity to prepare for future Olympic competitions. He explained that Pakistan secured the hosting rights after considerable effort. During the Asian Taekwondo Championship in Malaysia, Pakistan submitted its bid alongside China and Vietnam and was ultimately awarded the right to host the event. Colonel Janjua expressed confidence that Pakistan would win a gold medal at the championship adding that he believes a gold medal in the Poomsae event is highly likely. When asked about wild-card entries, he said Pakistan has never received one. He noted that obtaining wild cards falls under the responsibility of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) which has previously secured them for sports such as swimming and squash and urged the association to also support taekwondo. He added that Pakistani taekwondo athletes are now among the best competitors in Asia.
During the press conference, the official logo of the 8th World Taekwondo President’s Cup 2026 – Asian Region was also unveiled.
Colonel Janjua thanked the event’s sponsors including Ali Group Trade Corporation, JW Group, Avari Hotels and Royal Swiss Hotel for supporting the successful organization of the championship.
In response to another question, he said that four Pakistani taekwondo athletes are currently participating in the Asian Games in Japan. He also expressed the federation’s ambition to have Pakistan host the qualifying tournament for the 2028 Olympic Games adding that every effort will be made to achieve this goal.
